Despues de haber vivido un buen tiempo en un hotel entre todos los “hommes de affaires” y turistas, por fin vivo en mi propio pequeño palacio en Ankadivato, un barrio de Antananarivo, Madagaskar. Se nota aqui que algo ha cambiado en los ultimos años. El nuevo presidente Ravalomanana ha invitado a gente de todo el mundo para hacer negocios y estudios, pero siempre a sus condiciones.

Unos ejemplos.:
McDonalds quiso entrar en Madagaskar, el presidente les negó, pues no hay McDonalds aqui.
Yo mismo hago un trabajo para Wärtsilä de finlandia con ayuda del gobierno holandés, para hacer un central termico de 40MW.
Un equipo de una empreza tunizina hace un estudio para un parque tecnologica.

Ravalomanana, de president van Madagaskar, voert een echte verdeel en heers politiek. Overal vandaan komen de bedrijven en organisaties. De chinezen leggen wegen aan, uit canada en zuid afrika komen mensen om mijnexploitatie te beginnen, nederlanders bouwen een electriciteitscentrale, fransen bouwen bruggen. En al deze projecten worden in nauwe samenwerking met de lokale bevolking gedaan, zodat de kennis niet weg is als de buitenlanders weg zijn.

Diezelfde president heeft ook zijn gelijk gekregen in onderhandelingen met de wereldbank. Madagaskar kan best wat steun gebruiken van de internationale gemeenschap, maar dan moeten we wel zelf het gebruik ervan regelen, was zijn redenering. En de wereldbank ging zowaar akkoord, ongewend als ze waren aan een doorgewinterde onderhandelaar als counterpart in plaats van een corrupte over het paard getilde militair, zoals in vele afrikaanse landen en zo ook voorheen in Madagaskar.

Changes in recent years for Madagaskar are obvious for its people. For me this is impossible to see, as I landed 3 weeks ago on Ivato airport. The last 5 years Ravalomanana has started up many developments. Roads are being improved, international companies and organisations are invited to invest in the country. It may look sometimes like a sell-out but it seems to be better organised than many would expect. Although Madagaskar is still obviously a very poor country, these developments are very positive, as far as I can judge after a short time in the country. The poverty in Antananarivo is shown most obviously from the beggars in the streets around the top-range hotels; young bearfooted mothers with dirty little kids tied to them with a cloth, coming up to every vazaha around. On the other hand there is the vast hooker population that make you think every second woman in Tana will sell her body. More subtile is the recognition of everyone’s eager to make sure they can offer you all the services you need. This can sometimes be a little disrespectful to other people around, because it means also they want to take over someone else’s work.

Anyway I find the Malagasy a joyful and hardworking bunch of people with a possibility to grow to be a successfull nation. The eternal smile on many faces, even if they are nearly killed on the road by a car, is still a good thing to come across. Furthermore, the people on the plateau have the luck to live in relatively moderate climate with lately a lot of rain, but with a temperature of over 20 degrees and under 30 daily that is just good to fertilise the country and refresh yourself.
